The ex-wife of director Paul Haggis is defending the filmmaker amid a growing sexual misconduct scandal.
Actress Deborah Rennard, who divorced the Million Dollar Baby in 2016, has heaped praise on her former spouse after four woman accused him of lewd behaviour.
In a statement to Deadline, the Dallas star refuted specific portions of their claims, which she maintains are inaccurate.
"In all the years I have known, been married to, worked together with, and been Paul's ex, I have never known anyone more generous, caring, or selfless than him," she said of the 64-year-old.
"I don't know the women who are making these allegations against Paul - because they are anonymous," she added. "How is it even possible, in America in the year 2018, that someone can destroy another person's reputation and not even have to give their name?"
In December (17), New York-based publicist Haleigh Breest filed a lawsuit alleging Haggis raped her in his New York apartment in 2013.
Rennard claims her ex was recovering from back surgery at the time, adding, "He was in no physical condition to restrain a young woman against her will."
Another accuser, who worked as a publicist for one of the Oscar-winner's TV shows, has come forward with claims Haggis raped her in his office in 1996.
Rennard has also taken issue with the accuracy of her story.
"In 1996 Paul and I were working together on that series," she adds. "There was no in-house 'publicist' working in our offices - I would know, I had the office next to Paul's. We frequently worked late, and I always stayed with Paul and we always left together."
The 58-year-old concluded her statement by praising Haggis' character, insisting she cannot remain silent on the matter.
"I simply cannot stay quiet and let a good man's reputation be impugned," she wrote.
