Ewan McGregor is mortified that he cried about saying goodbye to his canine co-star during an interview.

The actor is Olivier in Beginners, a character whose father comes out when he is 75. The movie follows Olivier as he copes with his grief, and sees him bond with his father’s dog Cosmo.

As they shared so many scenes Ewan found he became very close to the pooch. He enjoyed working with his co-stars Christopher Plummer and Mélanie Laurent too, but it was the dog which really won his heart.

Ewan couldn’t bear the thought of being parted from Cosmo, so at the end of filming got himself a white poodle called Sid to fill the void.

“I’ve replaced him because it was devastating to leave him. I was doing the interviews for general press people, at the end of the shoot – it was the last week – and, as I was talking about saying goodbye to Cosmo, I started to cry. It was really embarrassing,” he recalled. “I was saying, ‘It’s been lovely to work with Mélanie and Christopher, and next week I’ve got to say goodbye to Cosmo,’ and I started crying.”

Ewan is pleased he got a chance to bond with Cosmo off screen as he thinks it makes their scenes more believable. He calls the pooch a “wonderful little man”, although he admits Cosmo did have another side.

Olivier develops a friendship with Mélanie’s character Anna over the course of the film, and Cosmo struggled with the scenes as he feared he was being replaced.

“When we started the second part of the story with Melanie, Cosmo got quite jealous ‘cause I was knockin’ about with a pretty French actress. He wouldn’t speak to me so much anymore,” Ewan explained to Collider.
