(Cover) - EN Movies - Fox are planning “back-to-back” Independence Day sequels, according to reports.

Director Roland Emmerich - who helmed the original 1996 film - and producing and screenwriting partner Dean Devlin are “putting the finishing touches on back-to-back sequel scripts”, according to Vulture.

The blockbuster was a huge success for the team and lead actor Will Smith.

However, it is currently unknown if the Hollywood actor will return to play Captain Stephen Hiller.

Insiders have told the publication that Fox is “willing to make the movies without Will, if necessary,” adding “It’s complicated because of where and how [Smith] wants to shoot; he wants to be close to home, to the kids.

“There’s also been talks about him wanting to include Jada and maybe even Willow in the movie, too. [Movies bosses] want the story straight, and want Will to sign off on it, totally, before they proceed.”

Little is known about the sequels at the moment. But sources say they will tell a single story.

“They’re intended to be fulfilling movies onto themselves — you could see each separately and enjoy them — but they tell one big story,” the insider added.

The original Independence Day follows an alien invasion of Earth.

A group of individuals and families converge in the Nevada desert and, along with the rest of the human population, participate in a last-chance counterattack on July 4.
