(Cover) - EN Movies - Johnny Depp believes The Rum Diary will be appreciated more in Europe because it is an “intelligent film”.
The actor can currently be seen in the film based on a novel by his friend the late Hunter S. Thompson.
It follows American journalist Paul Kemp, played by Johnny, on his travels around Puerto Rico.
There have been doubts about whether the movie will break even in America. But Johnny isn’t worried and believes that a European audience will enjoy it more.
"It's something that will be more appreciated over here, I think. Cos it's – well, I think it's an intelligent film," he said in an interview with British publication The Guardian. "And a lot of times, outside the big cities in the States, they don't want that."
Johnny is still remembered for his lead role in another Hunter S. Thompson adaptation, 1998’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
The star believes that although the new movie may not have commercial success, it will still stand the test of time.
“I believe that this film, regardless of what it makes in, you know, Wichita, Kansas, this week – which is probably about $13 – it doesn't make any difference,” he explained. “I believe that this film will have a shelf life. I think it will stick around and people will watch it and enjoy it."
Johnny admits that whatever film he is making he is never sure if it will be well-received. However, the 48-year-old claims he doesn’t care how well his movies do.
"No, God no, no. It's always a c**p shoot,” he laughed. “And really if you have that in your head while you're making a movie the process would become something very different. No, I couldn't give a rat's ass really."
