Johnny Depp amazed by success

Johnny Depp is amazed he can still "get away” with being an actor.

The 49-year-old has appeared in a string of successful films, including the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Chocolat and Sleepy Hollow.

He aims never to watch his movies back, but can't believe he continues to do so well when he's confronted with evidence of his work.

"Somebody once put together a reel of various bits of different films that I have done," he explained to Total Film.

"When I saw all the characters lined up in a row like that, I thought it was amazing that I was able to get away with it. I still feel lucky to be in the game... well, to be in the game without having to play the game too awful much, you know?"

Johnny's latest project is The Lone Ranger where he plays Native American Tonto.

For the star it felt like a personal film and he was keen in part to "make up" for the way Native Americans have been treated.

"I'm probably one sixteenth Native American, bit of course that's hard to trace," he revealed.

"Basically that mean's it's like that, somewhere along the line, you were the product of rape."

The actor is excited about introducing fans to his latest venture.

Johnny is no stranger to playing outlaws in the Pirates films and drama Public Enemies.

"We're just gonna give you a big, expansive experience. Which is what I wanted when I was a kid - to go to a summer movie that really enthralled me, excited me and moved me, and that's what The Lone Ranger does," he smiled.

"And well, outlaws are fun. They get to do things that we can't, y'know? Yeah, they break the rules. So there is that vicarious thrill."
