Michael Bay on 'Transformers 4 change-up'

Michael Bay thought it was time to “change it up” with Transformers: Age of Extinction.

The director is currently promoting the fourth instalment of the action franchise, which debuted in 2007 with Transformers.

Mark Wahlberg stars in Age of Extinction and Michael thinks the actor is the perfect lead, as the storyline has altered significantly since Shia LaBeouf left the series.

“The movie’s going great. It’s a very fresh new vibe,” he revealed in an interview with Slash Film.

“And I really love working with Mark; I’m glad we could do this together.”

Michael went on to explain every detail has been altered for Age of Extinction, including the robots themselves.

The filmmaker wanted the giant extraterrestrial creatures to possess a new level of authenticity.

“It’s almost like, I kept saying, ‘Batman needs a new suit.’ It’s time to kinda change it up,” he explained. “We learn a lot more about the Transformer world in this one. I wanted to focus on just the few robots and give them much more character.”

Michael confirms he filmed most of Transformers 4 with an extremely expensive 3D camera.

Although he’s still a lover of classic film, the director remains blown away by new advances in special effects.

“We’re shooting Red. We mix it, but now what we’re doing is, we’re the first movie to do IMAX 3D, the new digital camera is a million dollars. It’s a crazy, crazy camera,” he said.

“First of all, it’s really good 3D. I don’t care what you say, but just doing it on the cheap and converting it is never as good.

“Just the technology [makes the IMAX camera better]. The contrast of it is really rich. It’s also the resolution, it’s so beyond anything else.”

Transformers: Age of Extinction, which also stars Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor, reaches US theatres on June 27.
