Harrison Ford will “begin rehab shortly” after breaking his leg on the Star Wars set.

The 71-year-old actor is reprising his role as Han Solo in the long-running film series under director JJ Abrams. He was apparently preparing to shoot a scene with the Star Wars spacecraft Millenium Falcon when he had an accident, resulting in his being airlifted to hospital in Oxford, UK.

Following mixed reports, Harrison’s spokesperson has confirmed he needed an operation but is now on the mend.

"Harrison Ford's left leg was broken in an accident. His surgery was successful and he will begin rehab shortly. He's doing well and looks forward to returning to work," Ina Treciokas said.

It was originally thought that the American star had sustained an ankle injury.

The actor’s wife Calista Flockhart flew from America to join her husband at his bedside. Calista is most famous for the role of Ally McBeal in the popular US series of the same name. The couple married in a secret ceremony in 2010 after an eight year relationship.

Disney have said that filming will continue as planned. In 2012 the super-company bought Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars.

"It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of film-makers,” George Lucas chairman and founder of Lucasfilm explained at the time.

The £200 million movie is set to hit screens in December 2015.
