'The Maze Runner' is being rebooted.
20th Century Studios are bringing back the sci-fi adventure franchise and have approached Jack Paglen - who is best known for writting Johnny Depp's sci-fi film 'Transcendence' - to write the script for the new film, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Wes Ball, who directed the original 2014-2018 trilogy, will be involved as a producer alongside original producers Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman of Gotham Group and Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill.
The original films were based on James Dashner's best selling books, with the first movie focused on a group of teenagers who arrived at a walled setting named the Glade with their memories having been wiped. Beyond the four walls is a maze, filled with deadly mechanical creatures and a door that closes every night, but one new arrival figures out the key to their survival and attempts to lead them out. The sequels revealed a wider dystopian world with evil government organisations and corporations.
The reboot won't be a redo of the original story, or serve as a direct sequel to the trilogy but aims to make a continuation of the tale while returning to the elements that made the first movie - which took $348 million worldwide having cost a tenth of that to make - such a hit.
Dylan O'Brien and Kaya Scodelario starred in the original films.
The 32-year-old actor - whose on-set injury delayed the third movie, 'Maze Runner: The Death Cure' - admitted at the time it was "super sad" to say goodbye to the series.
Speaking at the film's premiere in London in 2018, he exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "It's a mixture of things. So many different emotions to be honest. It's super sad. It's like we are all going to miss it dearly. We are never going to get this time back together but obviously, we are always going to have each other in our lives. And that's what it is all about. If you ever come out of a working experience with close friends like it is really special."
Kaya added: "It feels really weird. It's been such a long time, we knew it was coming but we didn't think this day would come. But we are really proud of these three movies we have built together and we have the fans as well."
