Game of Thrones has bagged 19 Emmy Award nominations.

Those in the running for one of the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced by The Voice host Carson Daly and The Mindy Project star Mindy Kaling at the Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood this morning.

Just edging behind Game of Thrones is Fargo, which got 18 nods, and American Horror Story: Coven, which received 17.

Fan favourite Breaking Bad was biting at those shows' heels with a respectable 16 nominations.

All of those got mentions in the biggest categories, with Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad battling it out for best drama series. The category is one of the most hotly-contested this year, not least because True Detective is competing in it rather than as a miniseries. Also vying for the gong is Downton Abbey, House of Cards and Mad Men.

The best miniseries gong will go to either American Horror Story: Coven, Fargo, The White Queen, Bonnie & Clyde or Treme.

Making a similarly surprising decision to True Blood is Netflix original drama Orange Is the New Black, which is competing in the comedy series category. Also receiving mentions are Silicon Valley, The Big Bang Theory, Louis, Modern Family and Veep.

As expected, Bryan Cranston has received a nod in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series group for his role in Breaking Bad.

Joining him are Jeff Daniels for The Newsroom, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey for True Detective, Kevin Spacey for House of Cards and Mad Men's Jon Hamm.

The women's prize will go to either Michelle Dockery for Downton Abbey, Claire Danes for Homeland, House of Cards' Robin Wright, Kerry Washington for Scandal, Julianna Margulies for The Good Wife or Masters of Sex's Lizzy Caplan.

Mentioned in the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category are Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory, Matt LeBlanc for Episodes, House of Lies' Don Cheadle, Louis C.K. for Louie, Shameless' William H. Macy and Ricky Gervais for Derek.

For the women, Lena Dunham scored a nomination for Girls, with Edie Falco's stint in Nurse Jackie also winning her a nod. Rounding out the group are Amy Poehler for Parks and Recreation, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep and Mike & Molly's Melissa McCarthy.

The ceremony will take place at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles on August 25. Seth Meyers will host proceedings.
