Mélanie Laurent exaggerated English skills
29 July 2011
Mélanie Laurent lied about being fluent in English when she landed a role in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.
The French actress landed a key part in Quentin's World War Two caper, which starred Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz.
While the film sees her speak in both French and English, she had to learn the latter quickly after signing on for the film, and turned to a US show to understand the language.
“I had to learn fast because I lied to Quentin and said I was perfectly fluent. I watched Gossip Girl on repeat. That’s the best way to learn,” she told Stylist.
Mélanie seems to have picked up the language easily, and can be seen in Hollywood drama Beginners, alongside Ewan McGregor. She called the Scottish actor a charmer, and revealed that the pair hit it off on set.
“We had a burger on the road. Actually, I had two burgers and he was like, 'Oh my God, you’re the first actress I’ve seen do that.' But that was about all of the spare time we had,” Mélanie recalled.
