Outlander co-stars Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish are hitting the road together to explore Scotland's real history for a new travel series.

The actors, who play feuding relatives on TV, will visit key monuments across the nation to learn more about their shared homeland for the eight-episode Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip With Sam and Graham.

Among their stops will be the site of the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692, and the Culloden battlefield - depicted in Outlander - where the last big clash of the Jacobite Rising took place.

The show will be developed by officials at Sony Pictures TV for the U.S. network Starz - the same producers behind historical drama series Outlander, which is based on the books by Diana Gabaldon.

Heughan admits it was great fun travelling back through history with his friend and castmate: "I think we both know a lot about Scottish culture but we wanted to know more," the actor says. "We learned things we didn't know before.
"I wish we could do this every day. It's so fun."

In a statement, Christina Davis, the president of original programming at Starz, writes: "The genuine curiosity and passion that Sam and Graham have for the landscapes they visit and the stories they uncover while traveling through the heart of Scotland makes Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip With Sam and Graham a truly enjoyable journey of discovery for the audience.

"The series gives context and texture to Highland life and history, woven together, much like the tartan for which Scotland is so famous, and we look forward to taking this road trip with these two great friends."

Heughan and McTavish will serve as co-executive producers on the project, which has yet to be given a premiere date.
