Dave Chappelle attacker claims he was 'triggered' by comedian's jokes

Isaiah Lee has claimed he attacked Dave Chappelle onstage earlier this month because the comedian's jokes were "triggering".

Lee, who has been charged with four misdemeanours over the incident, told the New York Post in an interview released on Sunday that he tackled Chappelle onstage at the Hollywood Bowl because he was "triggered" by his jokes about homelessness and the LGBTQ community.

From the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, Lee said Chappelle should be more "sensitive" about his jokes.

"I identify as bisexual... and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering," he claimed. "I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect."

Lee said that he expected to have a "good time" at Chappelle's Netflix Is A Joke show, but grew frustrated as the comic joked about homelessness and the recent controversy surrounding his comments about the LGBTQ community.

The 23-year-old, who was once homeless, added, "I'm also a single dad and my son is five. It's a struggle and I wanted Dave Chappelle to know it's not a joke."

He alleged that Chappelle asked him backstage at the Hollywood Bowl why he did it, and recalled, "I told him my mother and grandmother, who fought for his civil rights to be able to speak, would be upset at the things he said."

Lee was charged with battery, possessing a deadly weapon with intent to assault, unauthorised access to the stage area during a performance and commission of an act that delays the event or interferes with the performer over the incident. He has pleaded guilty.
